Exceptional Education Overview Early Childhood

The Early Childhood (PK) program shall provide an array of services along a continuum ranging from direct instruction to consultation to students starting at age 3 with exceptional educational needs. The extent and location of services is determined on an individual basis by a team of qualified educators and the student’s parents (IEP Team). Students may enter into the Early Childhood program through transition from the County Birth-to-Three Program or through evaluation by school staff.
GOALS:
1. Work with and coordinate services of speech pathologist, occupational therapist (fine motor skills, sensory processing), and physical therapist (gross motor skills), and the regular education teacher with assistance of classroom aides.
2. Coordinate the development of Individualized Education Program (IEP) base upon identified needs as recommended by the IEP Team.
3. Provide instruction in small group setting with opportunities for individual instruction to develop appropriate academic, social, and behavioral skills.
4. Integrate students into the K4 and Kindergarten programs as appropriate based upon student’s individual needs.
5. Assess student progress. 6. Facilitate parent involvement and reinforcement of skills: activities shall be provided through presentations, information sharing, and home visits.
PROGRAMMING OPTIONS:
• Small class size
• Supported services within regular classroom
• Attend PK and K4 and Kindergarten in opposite sessions
• Consultation with classroom teacher(s) • Other options that best meet student needs
